Ref Clattenburg to boss Portsmouth game
(08/05/2008 10:28:36)
Mark Clattenburg (Tyne & Wear Co. Durham)
At the age of 33 he is by far the youngest referee in the Select Group of Officials.
When he was 16 he was sent on a refereeing course as part of the Duke of Edinburgh
awards and was immediately bitten by the refereeing bug.
Mark then started his refereeing career in 1990 and is the product
of the fast tracking system that allows referees of a young age and
ability to be rushed through the various levels of refereeing to enable them to
reach the top of their profession a lot more quickly. By 1999 he was promoted to the National List of Assistant
Referees and was refereeing in the Conference. He only spent a year on that list
before he was promoted once more to the National List of Referees meaning he was
just one step away from the Premiership. So at the age of 25 years old he became
the youngest referee to officiate in the Football League since 1956 when the legendary
Jack Taylor blew his whistle. Taylor went on to referee the 1974 World Cup Final
so Mark still has a lot to go for.
He became a FIFA referee in 2006, at the age of only thirty, reaching this distinction
earlier than any English referee in living memory.
Mr Clattenburg is a Newcastle United fan, and he is therefore not allowed to referee
competitive games involving Newcastle.

Mr Clattenburg has so far reffed nine Fulham Premiership games which have resulted in 3 wins 3 draw and 3 defeats with 22 yellows and 2 reds for Fulham players and
16 yellows for opposition
players. Fulham have not won in the 5 away games
bossed by Mr Clattenburg.
Referee Stats - 2007/2008

|
Ref Clattenburg blows his whistle more than his fellow Refs
and when he does whistle he is more likely to give
a yellow card making him the fourth busiest yellow carder in the Premiership.
After only three red cards in his first Premiership season he appears to be casting caution
to the wind this season with 8 reds in 25 games making him the second busiest in the Premiership.
Mark is also the 6th busiest Ref as far as pens are concerned

Ref Clattenburg has no real favourites when he whistles but when he gets his cards
out he is different to the norm.
He is clearly favouring visiting squads as far as reds and pens are concerned and
while he gives more yellows to visiting squads it is less than the league average.
Hopefully he doesn't decide to change for the Portsmouth game.

Dejan Stefanovic was lucky not to be sent of in the fourth minute when he brought
down Boa Morte as he prepared to charge through on goal, but referee Mark Clattenburg
opted for leniency and showed only a yellow card. This was the game were Steed Malbranque
failed to convert a penalty when Fulham were 1-0 down and suffering near the drop
zone. Bet Steedie was happy with the final score :-)
